Fire Emergency

Reporting a Fire

If you detect a fire in the building, remember the acronym C-A-L-M:

C = Call 9-1-1
A = Alert Building Security
L = Listen to Instructions
M = Move to a safe location

If you detect a fire in the building, immediately follow this procedure:

  • Telephone the Chicago Fire Department at 911.
  • Tell them:
    • I am reporting a fire.
    • The Building Address is ... 77 West Wacker Drive
    • The Fire Floor is ...
    • The location of the fire on the floor (if possible) is …
    • My Name is ...
  • Telephone Building Security at 312-917-4330, or use one of the Emergency telephones located within the stairwells on every fifth floor.
  • Tell them:
    • I am reporting a fire.
    • My Name is ...
    • The Fire Floor is ...
    • The location of the fire on the floor (if possible) is …

Engineering will respond immediately and determine the severity of the emergency. Security will initiate and supervise an emergency evacuation if necessary. Listen to the instructions given by Security personnel via the emergency speaker system. If an evacuation is necessary, exit the fire floor with all other personnel. Use the nearest stairwell. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers are located in each stairwell and may also be strategically placed at other locations on your floor by your employer. Find and remember their locations. To operate a Fire Extinguisher, remember the acronym P-A-S-S:

P = Pull the pin on the handle of the extinguisher
A = aim the nozzle of the extinguisher at the base of the fire
S = Squeeze the handle
S = Sweep the nozzle from side to side
